The folks at By the Brae were very welcoming and offered us great advice on nearby food, and historical attractions such as the Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns. By the Brae is excellently located for visits to these and other parts of Inverness. The room was spotless, quiet, and comfortable, and the breakfast excellent.

Easy and personal check in, information was given regarding local eatery. Times given for breakfast. Very well laid out. Room was of a high standard as was the whole place the breakfast room was very tranquil and the breakfast was exceptional well cooked and very tasty. Would definitely recommend, and hope to stay again. Thank you

Tips:

Good food served at the Culloden Moor Inn, only 2 miles up the road. Ignore the outside and venture Inside. Portion size would fill the hungriest person. Very friendly staff.

We chose this B&B for its convenience of being close to Inverness airport. BUT if it had not been fully booked we would have loved to stay for more than 1 night. Inverness is very close as is Culloden battlefield, but you would not know you were close to a big city, tucked away down a little lane. It is only a 5 minute drive from the A96 {Inverness to Aberdeen} The place itself is very comfortable.

Tips:

It is ideal to get to various areas such as Cairngorms, Black Isle, Nairn, Elgin etc. Road network is ideal.

This BnB is very well maintained and incredibily clean. Hosts were very welcoming and pleasant folks. Breakfasts were more than generous and very good. Loved the proximity to Culloden and more. Liked having a good pub nearby. Thanks for your hospitality; it's people like you who give Scotland a good name.

Tips:

This very clean and comfortable BnB was close to Culloden battlefield, Clava Cairns and Cawdor Castle. Inverness is only 4 miles away and a pretty straight shot (for Scotland).

We stayed two nights with our family and appreciated the comfortable rooms, elegant decor, excellent breakfast and proximity to many historic sites. Jenny & Richard are friendly and welcoming hosts and provided helpful information regarding nearby historic sites and restaurants. We highly recommend "By the Brae" for anyone travelling by car to Inverness. You can enjoy the peace and beauty of the countryside while having easy access to Inverness, restaurants and historic sites.

Tips:

Our favourite places included Culloden to understand a painful time in Scottish history, the ancient Clava Cairns, Cawdor Castle and gardens. The castle is overflowing with history and and beautiful artefacts which makes it especially appealing to anyone interested in art and history. We recommend the Black Isle Bar for organic beer & tasty pizza.

18th August 2018:

Richard and Jenny are terrific hosts and By the Brae is one of the nicest places we stayed in our more than three-week trip to the UK. The bedrooms are amazing, with details perfectly thought through and executed (Sandy and Lynn especially appreciated the washcloths and oversized towels), the house itself is lovely and in such a quiet and peaceful setting, and we absolutely loved having breakfast choices "cooked to order" and beautifully presented. Amazing place and highly recommended. Thanks for great suggestions as to "roads less traveled;" they truly made all the difference.

Tips:

Richard suggested a nearby pub, located near the entry to the Clava Cairns, that was perfect for our needs. Restaurants in the city require reservations, so be sure to ask about good ones and plan in advance. Richard also made great suggestions with regards to a back route from Inverness to Stirling, which not only saved time and a great deal of driving stress, but was scenic in its own right. During one of our days in Inverness we went to Urquhart castle, which was lovely but very crowded. If you plan to go, either go early or late, since late morning was packed. One of my personal favorites was the Groam House Museum of Pictish culture, near Fortrose on the Black Isle. We had only two days in Inverness; it deserves a lot more.

This is the second time I've stayed at By The Brae, and I will continue to stay here where possible on future trips to Inverness. Sarah and her husband were welcoming. The breakfast was fantastic and the room was gorgeous (bed was really comfy too).

Tips:

By The Brae is a 5 minute drive to Culloden and no more than 10 minute drive to Clava Cairns - so there really isn't a reason not to visit both. The Culloden Inn just up the road serves fantastic good - but make sure to book a table as it can be rather busy (and rightly so). I'd also suggest looking round Inverness Castle and having a walk along the river Ness (at night the bridges light up).

Richard was the ideal host, he provided all the amenities with a British flair. The accommodations were exceptional and modern. Convinces such as laundry service was a godsend for us traveling "light". Breakfasts were extensive and varied, one could customize each order taken by our entertaining host. By the Brae is minutes from the historical battle field/museum of Culloden. A moving experience much like the American Civil War site of Gettysburg.

Tips:

The Culloden Inn was only up the road and served a extensive menu with "large" portion for the price, go hungry. Locals and visitors make this a great place for conservation over dinner.

Just back from a fantastic stay at by the Brae, I was up for a golf tournament, and needed an early breakfast, no problem, room was clean, bed comfy, and bathroom spotless with a shower that actually works, Richard and jenny was very friendly, would highly recommend a stay at this property

Tips:

It's a 15 minute taxi ride into town centre that will cost around £13, shop is 5 minutes down the road by car, it's quite a rural location, which is a good thing, but needs to be taken into consideration

6th October 2017:

I was thrilled that the B&B was minutes from the Culloden Battle field, which is why I chose your B&B. The location was quiet, which was important for me as I have little down time. My room & bathroom were very modern & clean, with a large walk in shower. Breakfast was extensive, and most flavourful, & good Coffee! All in all I was very pleased with my brief stay, and would return most definitely; as the price was right!

Tips:

The ‘By the Brae’ is centrally located to the Battle of Culloden Battle field literally minutes away. A most worth while visit! A must see, are the ‘Clara Cairns’ & standing stones! They date back about four thousand years ago, and are located near the Culloden battle field, a few miles away down a winding road! Down town Inverness has an extensive array of restaurants and being right on the water, gives wonderful views! I’m looking forward to returning again soon!

Jenny & Richard were wonderful hosts and were very helpful telling us of places to visit. Our room was lovely with the most comfortable bed and the towels were luxurious. We arrived two hours earlier than planned after a long drive from a stopover in Motherwell and Jenny was kind enough to let us check in. The breakfast was wonderful and set us up for the day. The whole house was spotless with beautiful furnishings. We will definitely return.

Tips:

Culloden Battlefield is just 2 miles up the road and worth a visit and Cawdor Castle and Fort George are also close by. We did a day trip to the Whaligoe Steps in Sutherland and the scenery on the way there was breathtaking. We also paid a visit to Fortrose to see the Lighthouse, you drive through the golf course to get to it. We were hoping to spot some bottlenose dolphins in the Moray Firth but no luck, apparently best time to see them is early morning or at high tide.

A beautiful, quiet place to stay. Breakfasts are a special treat with a selection of tasty items. We especially liked the Salmon and eggs and the kippers. Got the day off to a great start!

Smart, high class B&B. Excellent, quiet location. Very friendly and helpful owners.

Tips:

Be sure to visit the Culloden Battlefield site: NT and NTS. Also the Clava Cairns: free parking and entry. The Culloden Moore restaurant may look uninspiring from the outside, but inside it is warm and welcoming and the food is good.

15th September 2016:

I found it a very peaceful place to stay during my road trip. Being just outside of the city of Inverness it was easy to drive to many regional sites of interest but completely accessible for going to the city. The room I stayed in was lovely with it's large window looking into your beautiful garden. The bed was particularly comfortable and the en suite clean and modern. I have to mention than your choice of breakfast items could satisfy anybody. I was very happy with my Scottish breakfast and kept me well set for my day. I was happy to have met you both during my stay there.

Tips:

I did go to the local Culloden Moor Inn which had nice food - though far too much so I should have remembered Richard's advice about asking for a smaller serve. Also do take note of the directions sent as it makes it much easier to arrive without any need to rely totally in the gps being one brae off with some. Also Clava Cairns is a fascinating site so don't drive past it.

Jenny and Richard are awesome and their house is very very comfortable. They make us feel in home or better than home, because at home we do not prepare that amazing breakfast. When we arrive there we were bored of English breakfasts and we could delight smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and different cheeses with ham. All with vegetables and tasty fruits, perfect for our diet. We would like to stay more.

Tips:

We loved their advises and recommendations. We went to Candor village and Tavern. On the way to Dundee they recommend is to pass through the mountains and amazing mountains and landscapes. And was fantastic!! But we have to sayWe ended A little bit tired, A9 would be more. Easy hahaha

The directions you provided were really helpful and I had no difficulty finding the B&B. You made me feel very welcome and the room was lovely, very comfortable, light and airy, and just the right temperature. It was very quiet with no traffic noise and I got a good nights sleep. The shower was excellent. It was good to see soap dispensers as I always feel bad about the waste involved with packaged soaps etc. The TV worked well as did the remote control (something that seems to be difficult to achieve in some hotels!) The breakfasts were outstanding, fresh and tasty and really good quality products and lots of choice. I usually miss my own free range eggs whilst away but yours were really good. I also appreciated that you were able to accommodate my dietary requirements as that makes a huge difference when staying away for several days. The tip about the pub along the road was good - otherwise I probably wouldn't have gone in. And finally, I really appreciated your help with my car and taking me to my course when it broke down - that was above and beyond helpful! Nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

A very warm welcome indeed. I was pleasantly surprised how lovely the room was, just as on the website. Attention to detail such an extendable magnifying mirror for putting make up on (or shaving), my biggest bug bear with all the larger hotels! There is a walk-in shower - everything spotlessly clean! The bed was comfy so I had a good nights sleep, bathrobes provided too! The only 'problem' I had was were to plug in my hairdryer, plenty of power points but none near to a mirror. A minor point but one that needs some thought. The lounge / diner is very comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. A good choice of breakfast items, its not self-serve so allow some time but it is cooked to order and I have to say the best breakfast I have had whilst away from home in many a year! Would I stay again? It's a resounding yes!

Tips:

My stay was brief, only one night before flying back to London the next day so did not get opportunity to see the local attractions; next time I hope!

22nd September 2015:

beautiful house but not so easy to find in the middle of the night ;-) with the written description of the way we got from Jenny and Richard we finally reached there. perfect equipped room, looked very new.... excellent breakfast and waiter-service ;-) We arrived fairly late but announced it in advance so it was no problem for our hosts. Thank you very much! We hope to come back one day!

Tips:

We only stayed there for one night but its not too far from Inverness so if you go by car it's really worth staying!

21st September 2015:

Our welcome from Jenny on arrival was very friendly and informative. We were looking for somewhere for dinner & she offered some recommendations. Our room was spotless and beautifully decorated with luxury bed linen, towels & robes. Our refreshment tray was well stocked and the bonus of some complimentary toiletries was a lovely touch. The ensuite was also spotless & very modern with a powerful shower which was a delight after a day of travelling. The location is beautiful with great views and tranquil surroundings. We had an excellent nights sleep followed by a great quality breakfast the next morning during which Richard was happy to cater for any requirement. We would definitely stay here again & have no hesitation recommending.

Tips:

The Culloden Moor Inn is 5 mins in a taxi costing around £6 each way from the bed & breakfast. It offers a friendly atmosphere, well priced drinks and some fantastic food! Portions are huge but all cooked to order & superb. Don't let the exterior aesthetics put you off, the inside is worth it

17th September 2015:

Everything was spot on. The attention to detail was fantastic right down to having robes for our use. We really cannot fault this place and such good value too.

Tips:

Our hosts recommended the local pub for an evening meal. It doesn't look much from the outside but was packed with locals and the food was good.
